Every professional wrestler dreamed of becoming a world champion when he was a kid. Before understanding the difference between heel and babyface, between real life and kayfabe, every fan’s dream was to hear the words “And New!” For the lucky few, that dream will one day come true, and anyone who thinks the booking nature of sports entertainment tarnishes that dream need look no further than the way wrestlers celebrate when they’re crowned.
Nia Jax’s celebration after her victory over Bayley at SummerSlam was the most recent example. The coronation of Code Rhodes at Wrestlemania 40 was a tear-jerking moment. Being a great wrestler is just the beginning. The most important thing is selling the character and storyline and convincing the crowd in each arena to care about your goal. And then the promotion has to deem it marketable enough to push it. It’s all a fascinating dance.
