Tigers SS Javier Báez placed on injured list due to hip and spinal inflammation

CHICAGO – The Detroit Tigers placed shortstop Javier Báez on the 10-day injured list Friday because of right hip and lumbar spine inflammation.

Manager AJ Hinch said they would know more about the injury after Báez underwent further tests.

Báez, who returned to Wrigley Field on Tuesday, was an integral part of the Cubs team that won the 2016 World Series, batting .375 in the NLDS and earning NLCS co-MVP honors against the Los Angeles Dodgers before helping the franchise win its first championship in 108 years.

He made the NL All-Star team in 2018 and 2019, but since signing a six-year, $140 million contract with Detroit in December 2021, he has been in trouble.

“Javy came into my office after the game and kept talking about ongoing problems with his hip and back, so we sent him for tests. The first test indicated he needs to go on the injured list. He will go through another round of tests, more tomorrow, before we know how extensive and for how long,” Hinch said.

Báez has a .184 batting average with six home runs and 37 RBIs in 80 games this season.

In a related move, the Tigers have recalled infielder Ryan Kreidler from Triple-A Toledo. He has played 21 games with the Tigers this season, recording six hits in 44 at-bats.
