Three dead in traffic accidents in Nelson County

NELSON COUNTY – Three people were killed in separate crashes in Nelson County over the weekend, Virginia State Police said.

On Saturday evening, two women were killed in an accident involving a 2024 Freightliner Cascadia on US 29 at the intersection with Irish Road in Nelson County, police said.

According to police, the Freightliner was traveling north when it collided with a 2011 Chevrolet Aveo that was entering the intersection.

The driver of the Aveo, Samantha L. Lively, 22, of Barboursville, died at the scene. A passenger, Heather E. Lively, 19, of Covesville, was taken to UVA Health in Charlottesville, where she also succumbed to her injuries.

The driver of the Freightliner was not injured.

On Sunday evening, one person died in an accident on US 29 near the intersection with Tye Brook Highway. According to police, a 2001 GMC Sierra was traveling southbound when it was unable to avoid a collision with a 2019 Dodge Ram 1500 that had entered the intersection.

The Dodge hit two traffic signs and came to a stop in the median, where it caught fire.

The driver, Avis W. Armentrout Jr., 75, of Roseland, died at the scene. A passenger, Martha J. Armentrout, 74, suffered serious injuries. She was taken to a nearby hospital. Neither Armentrout was wearing a seatbelt, police said.

The driver of the GMC, a 16-year-old girl from Nelson County, suffered serious injuries and was also taken to the hospital.

Both fatal accidents are still under investigation.
