Thousands without power in Washtenaw County after storms on Tuesday

WASHTENAW COUNTY, MI – Nearly 6,000 people in Washtenaw County are without power after a series of storms swept through the region Tuesday.

According to DTE Energy’s power outage map, there have been about 190 outages in the county since 7 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, knocking out power to nearly 5,700 people. The outages were primarily caused by wind damage.

According to DTE, power should be restored to most customers by Thursday evening, August 29. While some of the outages began as early as Tuesday evening, others lost power in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The power outages in Washtenaw County are concentrated mainly in the north of Ann Arbor. According to the DTE outage map, around 1,200 people were without power in the Kerrytown neighborhood on Wednesday morning. Around 1,600 people were without power in Ypsilanti and the surrounding area.

In Livingston County, around 11,500 people are also without electricity.

A severe weather warning issued Tuesday afternoon by the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center warned residents in southeast Michigan of wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour and possible hail or a tornado.

Since Wednesday morning, approximately 203,000 people in Michigan have had their power cut off.
