In an episode of the 5th season of Good bones, Mina Starsiak Hawk began the episode by celebrating beautiful butterflies with her son before heading off to the next project with her mother, Karen E. Laine. It seemed like it was a typical episode of Good bones. Laine and Hawk would restore a dilapidated house and the result would be extraordinary. That was the result, but the journey to get there was anything but extraordinary. The trip was a disaster.

For eight successful seasons, fans fell in love with the mother-daughter pair Good bones. The series followed the duo “Two Chicks and a Hammer” as they restored several historic homes in the greater Indianapolis area. With their unique relationship and style, the show was one of the most popular programs on HGTV. However, off-screen drama and changing personal developments led to the series being canceled in 2023. Despite the strained relationship between the two stars, they will return for a short special season on the network this month. But will it be as disastrous as the disaster at the cabin?

The “Good Bones” episode in which a house literally collapses

In the season five episode “Cottage Catastrophe,” Hawk and Laine investigate the Talbot Street Cottage, a two-bedroom, one-bathroom cottage in complete disrepair. Hawk described it this way: It looked like a haunted house. But something was definitely haunting that building. Hawk and Laine had renovated houses on this street before, so the mood was lively. The property had the potential to generate a return. It just needed to be completely redesigned. It was time to start making a profit again.

As the mother-daughter duo toured the inside of the current building, Hawk briefly panicked when she easily fell through the floor in the bathroom after some muddy plinths. The floor was rotted and essentially a harbinger of what was to come. On the way out, the mother of two pointed out that the foundation was bad as she pulled out the bricks. Although it was a harbinger of what was to come, Their to-do list included demolishing the back of the house, building a two-story addition to increase the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, repairing the existing foundation, and creating an open floor plan.

Hawk clarified that the renovation would cost over $180,000 after a $20,000 purchase. But after demo day, the worst happened. Amid laughter and tears, unable to find an emotion, she told her mother on the way to the project that everything was gone. As you can see in the clip above, the hut has collapsed. This made sense after Hawk explained everything to her mother at the viewing. Because of this huge mess, another $30,000 was needed to redraw the plans, which ultimately resulted in a bigger and better concept.

Whether it was pure coincidence or all part of the master plan, Laine found positives in a negative situation. With the help of her daughter, she compared this breakdown to a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. Regardless, a new floor plan was designed and a completely new home was built on the now vacant lot. The thing with shows like Good bones and other HGTV programs is that even in some of the most disastrous moments, it never seems like the end of the world. There are no rants. Hawk seemed perfectly fine despite knowing her budget was about to be increased. And you’d think that’s coming from a woman who went to the doctor in the same episode when she heard her baby’s heartbeat at six weeks pregnant. It’s been a rollercoaster of emotions for the designer.

This episode was wild for viewers because it shed light on how quickly things can go wrong when you least expect it. Sure, there were times when freestanding bathtubs and walls were missing, but Watching an entire building simply collapse is wild. While the average viewer probably doesn’t mind putting aside their skepticism of reality because they’re genuinely excited to see the end result, Hawk never revealed exactly why it happened, only saying that the neighbor saw on her camera that she last saw the whole thing at around 1 a.m.

The new special season of Good bones will see Hawk and Laine launch their own projects separately. It’s still the same foundation of the show that fans love, but it’s been revamped into a new format. What’s wild about that? Good bones‘ return is that HGTV is willing to bring the show’s characters back despite real-life issues between the two. Perhaps this could be a step toward the reconciliation that fans would so like to see.
