This day in Braves history: Warren Spahn wins his 300th career victory

1914 – Boston Braves P Lefty Tyler begins a 23-inning scoreless streak, but the Reds’ Red Ames evens the score today with a 13-inning tie (0-0).

1930 – The Cubs knock Brooklyn off the top spot by winning four games against the Braves. Cubs P Bud Teachout wins the final game 4-3 in 10 innings.

1934 – In a duel of the Smiths, New York beats the Braves 7-4. New York’s Al Smith allows just one hit in the five innings he pitches, defeating reliever Bob Smith, who then allows a three-run homer by Travis Jackson in the seventh inning.

1951 – The Dodgers win the first of two games against the Braves 8-1 thanks to Ralph Branca. The Braves win the second game 8-4 thanks to Max Surkont and a home run by Sid Gordon. With commentators Red Barber and Connie Desmond, the doubleheader is the first major league game to be broadcast in color.

1957 – In St. Louis, the Braves beat the struggling Cards with a three-game 5-1 victory by Gene Conley. Eddie Mathews rounds out the Braves’ scoring with a home run to center field in the fifth inning off reliever Willard Schmidt, and Ken Boyer adds to the Cards’ scoring with a home run in the ninth inning.

1959 – At Crosley Field, Joe Nuxhall strikes out 4 Braves – Eddie Mathews, Joe Adcock, Del Crandall and Johnny Logan – in the 6th inning and strikes out 10 overall as the Redlegs win 4-3 and move into second place. Crandall’s third strike gets past catcher Dutch Dotterer, giving Nuxhall the chance for the 4 Ks. In the 1st inning, Adcock wishes Vada Pinson a happy birthday by catching him at first base with a hidden ball trick.

1961 – Warren Spahn of the Braves beats the Cubs 2-1 for his 300th career win.

1964 – Hank Aaron passes Joe DiMaggio with his 362nd career home run in the Braves’ 9-6 victory over the Colt .45’s.

1967 – The Braves beat the Astros 6-5 in 16 innings, winning on a game-tying home run by Joe Torre. Both teams scored in the 14th inning and Mack Jones fought off Rusty Staub trying to score a second run for Houston. Felipe Alou tied the game with a home run.

1968 – Satchel Paige, age 62 or so, needs to play 158 days in the major leagues to qualify for a pension and is signed by the Braves. He will not pitch a regular season game for Atlanta and becomes a manager on September 30 and stays for another year.

MLB History

1929 – Babe Ruth hits his 500th home run, this time against Willis Hudlin of the Indians. Cy Williams currently ranks second all-time with 237 home runs.

1970 – Jim Bunning of the Phillies earns his 100th National League win, in addition to his 100th American League wins. He is the first pitcher since Cy Young to do so. Bunning beats the Astros.

2003 – The Royals beat the Yankees 12-9 and set a new American League record with 19 doubles. Kansas City hit 11 of the doubles, just one shy of the AL mark.

2003 – The Astros beat the Cubs 3-1. Chicago’s Kerry Wood becomes the youngest pitcher in history to reach 1,000 strikeouts – in 134 games. Roger Clemens accomplished the feat in 143 games.

2016 – David Dahl of the Rockies ties a major league record set by Chuck Aleno with the Cincinnati Reds in 1941 by getting a hit in his 17th consecutive game since his major league debut on July 25.
