This day in Braves history: Greg Maddux agrees to a five-year contract extension with Atlanta

1944 – Red Barrett needs just 58 pitches to beat the Reds 2-0, setting a major league record for fewest pitches in a nine-inning game. The game lasts one hour and 15 minutes, making it the shortest night game ever played.

1991 – A game between the Astros and Braves is stopped for five minutes when a moth lodges itself in the ear of Houston outfielder Mike Simms. Astros manager Dave Labossiere removes the insect with tweezers. The Braves eventually win 4-0.

1996 – The Rockies take an early 7-0 lead against the Braves, then hit back-to-back home runs in the 10th inning by Andres Galarraga and Vinny Castilla off Mark Wohlers for a 9-7 win.

1997 – Greg Maddux signs a five-year, $57.5 million contract with the Braves, becoming the highest-paid player in baseball.

2003 – Rafael Furcal becomes the 12th player in league history to make an unassisted triple play.

2004 – Tom Glavine is injured on a taxi ride to Shea Stadium when his cab collides with an SUV. Glavine loses both of his front teeth and requires over 40 stitches for facial injuries.

2013 – The Marlins end the Braves’ 14-game winning streak when Adeiny Hechavarria scores the game’s only run on a wild pitch from Jordan Walden in the ninth inning.

1902 – Cy Young gets his 25th win of the season as Boston beats the White Sox 5-4 in 11 innings.

1917 – Babe Ruth hits a home run and allows only four hits in a 5-4 win over the Tigers.

1924 – Ty Cobb steals second base, third base twice, and then home base to help the Tigers to a 13-7 victory over Boston.

1934 – Babe Ruth announces that the 1934 season will be his last as a regular player and that he will instead seek a managerial role and occasionally fill in as a pinch hitter. However, he reverses this decision and signs a contract to play with the Boston Braves in 1935.

1957 – Mickey Mantle becomes the first player to clear the center field hedge at Memorial Stadium as the Yankees beat the Orioles 6-3.

1960 – Ted Williams hits two home runs, passing Mel Ott and moving into fourth place on the all-time list. After the game, Williams announces that he will retire at the end of the season.

1985 – Willie McGee hits seven in a doubleheader win over the Phillies, raising his batting average for the season to .351. McGee will lead the league with a .353 average.

1988 – The Dodgers fire Don Sutton.

1993 – Mets pitcher Bret Saberhagen admits to spraying three reporters with bleach on July 27. He agrees to donate his day’s wages to the Eye Research Foundation.
