“There have been deaths on this street”: Neighbor not surprised by shooting on Champlain Street; victim fights for his life

ROCHESTER, NY — A 31-year-old man is fighting for his life after being shot at least once in the lower body on Champlain Street in Rochester late Wednesday morning.

Rochester police responded to a report that a man had been shot on Champlain Street, near Jefferson Avenue, shortly after 11:30 a.m. When officers arrived, they learned that the victim had been taken to Strong Memorial Hospital in a private vehicle with life-threatening injuries.

For Keymonie Redden, a longtime Champlain Street resident, the shooting was sad but not surprising.

“This is a recurring factor that happens every year,” Redden said. “There have been deaths on this road. I’ve lived here since I was five years old.”

Redden, who has called this street home for decades, says nothing has changed.

“I wouldn’t say it’s unusual because some people like to start fights with each other and sometimes it just escalates to the point where you just want to take someone out,” she said. “Some people don’t have that, what’s it called, heart in them. They think, ‘Oh, I’m just going to take this person out because they did something to me.’ They don’t have that mindset. That ‘Don’t do to others what you don’t want done to you. It will come back to you.'”

Although the investigation is still in its early stages, evidence collected at the scene leads Rochester police to believe the shooting occurred on Champlain Street.

Police are still looking for a suspect. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call 911.
