The Wings Over Camarillo Air Show begins on the first day

The 43rd annual Wings Over Camarillo began early on August 17th.

The theme of this year’s air show is “Honoring Test Pilots,” honoring those who have paved the way in aviation technology and safety.

Attendees had the opportunity to see World War II aircraft and aerobatics. The Grand Marshals of Wings Over Camarillo were on hand throughout the day to offer advice and wisdom about what it is like to be a test pilot. The Grand Marshals included Roy Martin, a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, Thomas A. Morgenfeld, retired U.S. Navy Captain, Kurt Schroeder, retired U.S. Navy Captain, and Kevin Gross, retired United States Marine Corps Colonel. All have many more accomplishments to their name.

“In high school, you say, ‘Hey, I want to get into this particular career of flight testing.’ From there, you go to college, where the emphasis is mostly on math and science, and you progress from there,” said Grand Marshal Roy Martin. “Then you go into specializations. In my case, I did pilot training in the Air Force, fought as a fighter pilot in Vietnam, and then went to test pilot school at Edwards Air Force Base. From there, after you graduate from test pilot school, you’re a test pilot.”

There was a STEM pavilion on site that was filled with hands-on activities throughout the day and the opportunity for visitors to learn about STEM opportunities and programs.

“It could open many doors to many career opportunities, because many people don’t know that there are many other career opportunities in aviation besides being a pilot, such as air traffic or dispatch,” said 20-year-old pilot Marina Garcia.

And let’s not forget the annual classic car show that takes place there. Over 150 cars have registered to take part.

The Wings Over Camarillo air show will take place on August 17 and 18 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets must be purchased.
