The second night of the DNC was so good that even Meghan McCain liked it: “It beats the RNC roll calls by far”

It was a magical second night for the Democratic National Convention.

The roll call, sponsored by DJ Cassidy, was so imaginative and cool that even Republican Meghan McCain, daughter of the late John McCain, was impressed by it.

She wrote, “I’m sorry but this #DNC2024 roll call with DJ Cassidy, country themed music and party/club atmosphere is putting the RNC name to shame. It looks like a huge party and celebration and everyone in that room seems to be having a blast.”

I’ve been to three conventions in my life, but this one looks like the one I should have gone to. The DNC has turned the convention into a party. It’s light and airy. Everyone is happy to be there. I want to start a drinking game every time I hear the word “joy.”

She’s so right. I love the roll calls every four years. You see how diverse this country really is, cool people from all walks of life contributing to the American dream. I love the people from the non-states, especially: Guam, Puerto Rico, the Marianna Islands, the Virgin Islands. They rely on us to make the right decisions.

The keynote speeches were all spot on. Doug Emhoff knows what he’s doing. When he finally spoke about his blended family, the bus ride to Hebrew school and the time his daughter spent alone with Kamala, he had the audience in the palm of his hand.

But the big stars were Michelle and Barack Obama. Their speech was like a hit that wins a Grammy and stays at number 1 for weeks. This speech could go down in history because of its form and humor. Their speech deserved an award.

Her handover to Barack was so loving that it was hard to imagine what Melania Trump was thinking at home (if she was even listening). She has no relationship with her husband. The Obamas, the Emhoffs and the Walzes are rare examples of great couple families.

Then Obama’s speech was like a Grammy-winning album of the year, but a concept album, like Dark Side of the Moon. It had so many hits, interwoven with great moments in between. It was a spectacular composition that was stirring.

And as for DJ Cassidy, who I’ve known since he started, wow, what an effort he put into composing the whole roll call. He had tunes for every state. He knew when to turn the volume down so we could hear the speakers. But his decisions were absolutely spot on.

I loved when he used The B52’s “My Own Private Idaho” for Idaho. That was incredible. I was surprised he didn’t use Aretha Franklin for Michigan – he had her relocated to Maryland. But then Eminem was his choice for Michigan. Aretha wouldn’t have been happy, but it all worked out.

The production of this DNC is Emmy-worthy considering there were other nominees a month ago.

Disappointment with the media: The big three networks are still airing crap until 10pm and missing the good stuff. Fox News keeps trying to stir up a riot by putting the police on the screen. Fox News has a way of missing the real news. But MSNBC and even CNN have done a good job. I was impressed with Ari Melber’s rap skills. He really loves it!
