The Santaquin family speaks out after the accidental death of a 5-year-old

SANTAQUIN, Utah – Following the accidental shooting death of a 5-year-old in Santaquin, his family released a statement Friday urging other families to make the safety of their children their top priority.

Santaquin police reported Thursday that the 5-year-old died after finding and firing a 9mm handgun at home. Family members attempted to save his life, but he succumbed to his injuries.

Police are still investigating how the weapon was fired.

“On August 22, 2024, the Wilson and Hunsaker families experienced an unimaginable tragedy and lost a valued member who will be greatly missed,” the statement said.

It was further stated that the family would rely on their faith to get through the tragedy.

The statement thanked first responders and the public for their support.

“Our hearts are shattered and we hope the loss of our family reminds us how quickly life can change. We hope this tragedy reminds others to take every precaution to ensure the safety of their children,” the statement continued.

The family ended their statement by asking for privacy as they continue to mourn the loss.

Yet, through our faith in Jesus Christ, we will get through this trial as we feel His love so strongly. We extend our heartfelt thanks to those who responded and the community for their overwhelming support and compassion. This heartbreaking incident has taught us difficult lessons and we deeply regret that it happened this way. Our hearts are shattered and we hope that the loss of our family serves as a stark reminder of how quickly life can change. We hope this tragedy reminds others to take every precaution to ensure the safety of their children. As we come together to grieve, we politely request privacy during this difficult time as we mourn the loss of our beloved little boy.”
