‘The possibilities are endless’: Tulsa Police Department’s Career Exploration Day highlights various careers in law enforcement

A job with the police is a dream goal for many.

“I think every kid dreams of becoming a police officer someday,” said Larry Jones.

For Jones, this dream is now one step closer to reality.

With a desire for change, he participated in the Tulsa Police Department’s Career Exploration Day.

“I always wanted to work with the community and with people and just be an advocate or helper, and I decided that would be a good career choice,” he said.

Jones says he has worked as a bricklayer for the past 15 years, but it has not fulfilled him.

“I felt like I just had to settle for something higher,” he said.

Officer Troy Honeycutt says the department wants to use the event to help people like Jones discover their full potential.

“The possibilities are endless,” he said.

And possibly find a role for them in their department.

Officer Honeycutt says many people don’t realize how deep the Tulsa Police Department goes and they hope to show that through the event.

“We have over 60 special units in this department, so you can definitely move around freely,” he said.

Jones is not yet sure what kind of officer he wants to be.

“As far as a specific offer goes, no, I’m open to pretty much anything,” he said.

But he says he knows he has big goals and hopes to make that childhood dream come true … and that starts next week with the Tulsa Police Academy entrance exam.

“I’m close and I’m just excited,” Jones said.
