The murder of 7-year-old Terrez Coleman

The murder of 7-year-old Terrez Coleman

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (WAFB) – On August 16, 2014, 7-year-old Terrez Coleman and his sister were shot in the back seat of a car when an oncoming driver shot at them. Terrez was killed and his sister still has a scar from the same bullet. It happened on Prescott Road between Joor Road and Lanier Drive. The Coleman family was on their way home from a family reunion when the tragedy struck.

Ten years have passed since Terrez Coleman’s murder, and the family is still searching for answers. Terrez’s mother, Felicia Young, says they keep his memory alive by talking about him and wondering where he would be without this senseless killing.

“I’m angry, I’m angry every day,” Young says. “For 10 years, I haven’t known who killed my son. That’s not fair to me. That’s not fair to them. I just wish someone would say something.”

Lieutenant Scott Henning Jr. is the head of the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office’s homicide unit. He was the second person on the scene. He says someone, somewhere, has information he needs.

“That’s almost the mystery of it, that you don’t even know why. Not only do we not know who did it, but we also don’t know why,” says Henning.

Henning says her only lead is a white four-door sedan that she filtered out from surveillance footage of the area.

The lieutenant says he keeps Terrez’s picture in his office as a reminder that the case is not closed. The picture has been hanging in his office since the day after Terrez was murdered.

“Every morning when I walk through this door for ten years, I see his face,” says Henning. “The suitcase is here in my office. I see it regularly.”

Henning is convinced that Terrez would have done great things for himself and his community if he had been given the chance.

“I don’t know. I just want someone to tell me what happened to my baby,” Young says. “I’m just praying that someone actually comes forward. It’s been ten years. Ten years of no closure or no, I’m sorry. I just need to know what happened to my baby.”
