The most anticipated historical novels in fall 2024

Welcome to Tuesday. Let’s read about books, okay?

It’s no surprise that readers of historical fiction are always on the lookout for the next breakthrough in the genre – can anyone dethrone Kristin Hannah? Fall is the busiest publishing season of the year, and it brings some fantastic new historical novels to shelves. Goodreads has selected these 21 new historical novels as ones you should add to your reading list.

While the demand for these formats is undeniable, current technology has its limitations. Reading with color E Ink is much slower than black and white, so E Ink needs to be improved before Amazon will embrace it. Reading on a black and white Kindle can be slow at times; how much slower will it be in color? Think about reading manga with black and white E Ink: it’s painfully slow compared to reading on an iPad. I can imagine the experience with color E Ink will be frustrating. In addition to lag, color E Ink also has display issues.

This week’s selection of new LGBTQ books includes a gay fantasy crime thriller in a beautiful hardcover anthology, a haunting queer gothic horror novel, a foodie F/F love story set in Vietnam, a royal M/M love story, queer poetry from a beloved Book Riot poet, a biography of eternal life by Audre Lorde, and a nonbinary BIPOC anthology.

Now let’s talk about this week’s new books! Today I have a thrilling new post-apocalyptic novella, a second book in a wonderful middle grade mystery series, and a dark, spooky horror fantasy.

I don’t remember going through a phase as a kid where I wanted to own my own business (I wanted to write horror novels and be a spy: a perfect combination), but lots of kids do. My daughter says she wants to run a cat rescue pet shop. I’m allergic to cats, so I told her she can do that when she moves out! These four children’s books are great for kids with big business ideas.

Now, the Materials Review Committee has recommended that the board remove all transgender books from the young adult sections as well. Any books that feature a character who has transitioned from one gender to another, or is in the process of transitioning, will be moved to the adult section. This applies to both written text and illustrations, and will likely include books that address topics such as pronouns or drag, as was the case with the ban on trans books for under-12s.

I’ve compiled a few books that give us a glimpse into the lives and perspectives of female writers from around the world, from a Japanese serial killer to life during the Rwandan genocide and even a book that helped launch the current feminist movement in South Korea.
