The good, the bad and the ugly from the Packers’ season finale

The good, the bad and the ugly from the Packers’ season finale

The Green Bay Packers concluded the 2024 preseason with a 30-7 victory over the Baltimore Ravens on Saturday at Lambeau Field. After practicing together on Thursday, Packers coach Matt LaFleur decided to bench most of his key players to ensure his team is as healthy as possible for its Week 1 clash with the Philadelphia Eagles in Brazil.

In a game of substitutes, the Packers started fast, scoring on three of their first four possessions before a defensive touchdown gave them a 20-7 lead. Green Bay allowed just one point – a 48-yard touchdown pass in the first half on a broken defense. Two second-half turnovers helped the Packers to a dominant win of the season.

Here are the good, the bad and the ugly of the Packers’ victory in the last preseason finale against the Ravens:

The good

Bo Melton and Malik Heath caught key touchdown passes, the defense forced four turnovers and the Packers came out of the preseason well in terms of the injury situation. Melton had an 18-yard touchdown catch on 3rd-and-4 in the first half, while Heath outgained the defensive back on a 7-yard touchdown catch on 4th-and-4 in the second half. Both receivers have a good chance of making the 53-man roster. Jeff Hafley’s defense had two interceptions and two fumble recoveries, including a fumble return for a touchdown. Defensive end Arron Mosby accounted for two of the four takeaways with a strip sack and an interception while diving into coverage. In terms of injuries, the Packers benched 38 key starters and veterans, so they did not suffer a season-altering injury in the final preseason game. The only reported injuries were to linebackers Ralen Goforth and Jonathan Ford.

The bad

Michael Pratt’s interception and tackle attempt. After a solid first half in which he completed six of his first eight passes and threw an impressive touchdown pass to Bo Melton, Pratt struggled through a rough second half highlighted by a bad interception thrown right to a Ravens linebacker. Under pressure, he rashly threw the ball into heavy coverage. Visibly frustrated by the call, Pratt attempted to catch up to Trenton Simpson, but ran out of air on the tackle attempt. It looked like a car crash, but after catching his breath, Pratt left the field and eventually returned. While Pratt struggled in the second half, Sean Clifford had his own issues in the first half, completing just 3 of 10 passes while dealing with plenty of pressure.

The Ugly

Carlson’s last-minute miss was different. Just when it looked like he had the kicking job secured, Carlson kicked a 32-yard field goal wide of the right edge in the second half. Conditions at Lambeau Field were nearly perfect and the snap was good. Carlson narrowly missed, and the attempt wasn’t exactly close. The miss was a harsh reminder of Carlson’s inconsistency as a kicker. He had made his first three kicks, including a 54-yard kick, but after another confidence-shattering miss to start the regular season, can the Packers really trust him?
