The Good Phight Player of the Week: August 12-18

The Good Phight Player of the Week: August 12-18

When can we declare a player “back”? So how long does he have to be out before we can say he’s back to normal? This week we got a possible answer to that question, as Trea Turner had a week off after a day of rest to recover.

Trea Turner, ages 12-18 August: 22 PA, 1 HR, 4 RBI, 6 R, .476/.500/.762, 4.5 BB%, 18.2 K%

Since his day off on Wednesday, Turner has been hitting nothing but batting. It’s not just the power he’s enjoyed, but the quality of his at-bats. The flailing around on pitching and pitching has decreased, the quality of contact has increased, and the team has played better as a result. It’s no secret that the Phillies play the way their stars play, and Turner is a star.

Honorable Mention

Johan Rojas: 17 PA, .375/.412/.438, 1 2B, 4 RBI

Rojas has been quietly better at bat. In August, he had a batting average of .333/.389/.394 with just seven strikeouts in 33 at-bats. He has a really high BABIP of .423 during that time, which makes it seem a bit of a mirage, but his batting has really improved. Combine that with Brandon Marsh’s struggles and you can kind of see how the playoff team will play out in October. If Rojas can actually keep this up in the playoffs (although everything indicates he won’t), he’ll be in every single game.

Cristopher Sanchez: 9 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 9 K, 1 complete game

Sanchez’s start was encouraging based on his previous performances. In his previous seven starts, he had a low of 6.63 ERA, which had increased his ERA for the season by nearly half a run. It was nice to see him return to his changeup/sinker combination that caused weak contact all evening. Now, much like Turner, we want to see how he does it again against better competition before we can declare him “back.”
