The Gladstone Sail School prepares students for life on the water

GLADSTONE, Michigan (WZMQ) – On Thursday, a group of students braved rain and waves to learn some important skills in Little Bay de Noc.

The City of Gladstone Sailing School taught nearly 50 students about different types of boats, how sailboats work, and sailing safety. To demonstrate and celebrate their knowledge, the group competed in Hawaiian-themed sailboat races in their graduating class.

“Many of them have never been on a sailboat or have never been on a boat alone,” said lead instructor Troy Drebenstedt. “We have a lot of young kids. They’re learning problem solving, they’re learning how to build their confidence and teamwork. They’re learning more than just sailing.”

Fourteen-year-old student Kristof Stahlmann says the skills he learned in the two-week sailing school have prepared him to be more knowledgeable and confident on the water.

“I took this course because it’s fun,” he said. “I really enjoy sailing. My family has a sailboat and I get to help out on the boat, which is nice because I understand the basics better. Especially when you live on the Great Lakes, being able to sail on a boat is a nice skill to have.”

Next year, Gladstone Sail School plans to move to a week-long format and offer more courses during the summer. For updates on future courses, join the Gladstone Michigan Sail School Facebook group.
