The Foreign Ministry publishes travel information for Italy before the half-year holidays

The British Foreign Office has updated its travel advice for Italy ahead of the May holidays. Holidaymakers were warned of the dangers of volcanoes following an earthquake in Naples on Monday.

The Foreign Ministry said: “There are several active volcanoes in southern Italy. National emergency planning has been updated for Vesuvius as well as the Phlegraean Fields, an area that remains active and where earthquakes have occurred in 2024.”

It added that travellers from the UK should follow the advice of local authorities in the event of a volcanic eruption. The FCDO advises travellers to read the Italian government’s guidelines on what to do in the event of a volcanic eruption.

This comes after Naples was hit by the strongest earthquake in a decade on Monday, shaking a volcanic crater. A 4.4 magnitude quake was recorded just after 8pm local time (6pm GMT) and struck a depth of 2.5 kilometers, according to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), with dozens of aftershocks recorded, The Mirror reports.

The earthquakes occurred at Capi Glegrei, the caldera of the Phlegraean Fields, a mountain between Naples and Pozzuoli in the shadow of the more famous Vesuvius. Between 7:51 p.m. on Monday and 12:13 a.m. on Tuesday, around 150 earthquakes were recorded there.

The UK Foreign Office also warns that “minor tremors and earthquakes are a regular occurrence” in Italy and recommends that travellers familiarise themselves with the advice on the Italian Ministry of Civil Protection’s website. It is always important to check the Italian Ministry of Civil Protection’s website for the latest travel advice before travelling.
