Although there were plans for a sixth film starring Depp, plans changed and the actor’s legal troubles led to him being dropped from the franchise. The studio has announced plans for a reboot film as well as a female-centered spinoff led by Margot Robbie.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Jerry Bruckheimer expressed his hope that both films will be made. The script for the reboot is by Jeff Nathanson, while the script for the female spinoff is by Christina Hodson. The producer and Disney are equally excited about the two projects and are working to make them happen soon. Bruckheimer said:
They are two different films. We hope to make both of them happen, and I think Disney agrees and really wants to make the Margot film.
The producer also updated fans on the status of the reboot film, stating that Nathanson delivered a fantastic third act for the film. While fans will be sad to see Depp not return to the franchise, it will be interesting to see how the franchise continues with these two films.
