BOSTON (AP) — George Springer hit a three-run home run – his second of the day – to cap a five-run fifth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays took a two-game lead over struggling Boston with a 7-3 win Monday night and handed the Red Sox their fifth straight loss.

In the afternoon’s first game, Danny Jansen’s former team beat his current one, as Springer beat the Green Monster with a 416-foot home run and seven Toronto pitchers combined for a four-hitter to beat the Red Sox 4-1, ending a game that had to be suspended due to rain in June.

Jansen made history as the first Major League player to play for both teams in the same gamehe started as Toronto’s catcher on June 26 when play was suspended in the second inning — with Jansen at bat. The backup catcher was traded to Boston on July 27 and was behind the plate when play resumed Monday after a delay of 65 days, 18 hours and 35 minutes.

“It was a very cool moment just to be there,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. ”I don’t know if it will happen again. It would have to be the perfect storm for that to happen – starting with the storm. And I’m glad everyone enjoyed it.”

In the second game, with Toronto trailing 1-0, Springer hit a drive against reliever Brad Keller (0-4), who rounded the Pesky Pole and hit his 19th home run to make the game 3-1. Addison Barger followed with an RBI single and Ernie Clement added a run-scoring double to cap off the big inning.

“I’m just glad to be able to help us out there,” Springer said, smiling. “It was a big situation. … Our team is still fighting. We have guys (in the clubhouse) fighting.”

The Red Sox made four errors and fell to 14-22 since the All-Star break. They fell even further behind Minnesota and now occupy the third and final wild-card spot in the AL after falling to 29-37 in games played at Fenway Park.

“We’re just not playing good baseball right now,” Cora said. “It was a tough weekend. We just have to play better and we’re doing that. We’ve established a style of baseball over the course of the season and right now it’s not working.”

José Berríos (13-9) won his fourth straight start, allowing three runs, two earned, on eight hits with six strikeouts and no walks in 7 2/3 innings. The Blue Jays have won six in a row. Brendon Little got the final four outs for his first career save.

“Right now I want to keep doing what I’m doing,” Berríos said when asked about his last month.

Jarren Duran also hit two home runs for the Red Sox that day, his second being a two-run shot in the night game after a solo home run during the day.

Boston right fielder Wilyer Abreu was ejected by umpire Paul Clemons in the third inning after he swung and said something as he walked away. Abreu appeared to be bothered by the second pitch – a high strike that completed the count.

During the day’s game, Jansen had one of Boston’s hits, a single in the fifth inning. He was not credited with a single for Toronto; he went to the plate and blew out a pitch before the tarps were brought out on June 26, and Daulton Varsho was credited with the strikeout after Nick Pivetta struck him out on two more pitches.

Springer’s 18th home run ended a scoreless tie in the seventh inning, and the Blue Jays scored three more times in the eighth when Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a two-run double and scored on a double by Barger.

Zach Pop (1-3) got the last out of the sixth inning to secure the win. Chad Green pitched the ninth inning for his 15th save and struck out Jansen – who was trying to control his swing – with a runner on second base to seal the win.

Boston’s Nick Pivetta (5-9) had ten strikeouts and no walks and allowed three runs in six innings – two of them deserved.

TRAINING ROOM

Red Sox: Abreu limped off the field after suffering a strikeout in the first inning when he failed to hold a check swing and the ball struck the top of his left foot. He stayed in and caught the ball on the slide in the next inning.

Next

RHP Chris Bassitt (9-12, 4.41 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Blue Jays on Tuesday. The Red Sox will start with RHP Cooper Criswell (5-4, 4.41).
