Text message scam targets voters in Pennsylvania county; officials issue warning

The Bucks County Board of Elections is issuing a “Voter Alert” following a recent phone scam.

“There is currently a potential attempt underway to intimidate voters and provide misinformation.”

Officials say a group is contacting voters by phone or text message to make misleading claims about discrepancies in voter information and problems with registration.

The group is said to pose as “voter protection” or “voter protection volunteers” when carrying out the fraudulent telephone scam.

“This is yet another attempt to sow confusion, distrust and misinformation in our election process,” said Bob Harvie, chairman of the Bucks County Board of Elections. “We will not be intimidated. Every vote will be counted and voters will not be threatened under my watch.”

The forum gives the following tips on how you can protect yourself from scammers:

  • These calls/SMS come from area codes outside of Bucks County.
  • The group urges voters to “call the Election Commission,” but provides a misleading number.
  • The Bucks County Board of Elections has nothing to do with these calls or text messages.
  • If the Bucks County Board of Elections needs to contact you, the caller ID will be “County of Bucks” and the number will be 215-348-6000. We primarily communicate with voters by official mail sent through the United States Postal Service.

Authorities ask citizens to remain vigilant and contact the authorities if they receive suspicious messages.
