Texas vs. Florida in LLWS 2024: Live score updates, highlights

The first pitch was delayed due to a long previous international game.

First inning: Texas ties after Florida takes the lead

After Florida scored in the first half of the inning, Texas’ Cooper Hastings hit a single into the right field corner, bringing in Gray Collins. However, Hastings was left helpless at first base due to two strikeouts by Florida’s top pitcher JJ Feliciano.

Second inning: Texas, Florida still tied 1-1

Jacob Bibaud hit a single to start the inning, but was thrown out while attempting to advance to second base. Pitcher Julian Hurst walked back to the mound with his head down, but threw out Bibaud as he slid to second base.

Hurst struck out Liam Morrisey and Luis Calo, allowing four strikeouts and three hits in two innings.

In the second half, JJ Feliciano struck out Caden Guffey, who had hit a home run early in the inning in the last game against Pennsylvania. He grounded Jett Matthews out on a full count and then struck out Aiden Muñoz, giving Texas a baserunner with two outs. Gage Steubing, one of the few left-handers in Boerne’s lineup, took a 3-0 lead, but Feliciano fought back and struck him out with momentum.

Third inning: Texas takes the lead after Florida’s ace leaves

Hurst struck out the team, with the final K coming on just three pitches. Texas’ top hitter finished his third inning with 48 pitches – more than half of the 85-pitch maximum. As of now, he will need two days off before he can pitch again.

Feliciano walked Kaleb Christ early in the second half of the inning on a 3-2 pitch that could have gone either way. Dylan Burke then caught the first pitch, leading to a mound meeting. But Feliciano came back and struck out Burke for his seventh K. Ben Burkhart was hit by a pitch, Feliciano’s third hit batter of the night. Florida’s ace was taken out of the game after 50 pitches and will need two days rest; with one more pitch he would have gone three days without pitching.

Calo replaced Feliciano on the bump to face Hurst, Texas’ best hitter, with two runners on base and one out. A wild pitch put runners on second and third base. Florida decided to intentionally walk Hurst with an open base. Calo then threw two consecutive wild pitches, allowing two runs to score. Texas led 3-0 when Florida made another pitcher change.

Bibaud took a 2-0 count with a runner on third base and one out. He hit the first batter to face him to put runners on the corners. Hastings, who had an RBI earlier in the game, hit a chopper to third base. The third baseman came home on the throw, but Hurst, the runner on third, was able to retreat safely to third base. No out was recorded and the bases were loaded for Kyle Newson, who hit a Pennsylvania home run. Newson was caught near the inside corner on a 3-2 pitch. Bibaud took a 0-2 lead against Doc Mogford, but Mogford hit a single to left to score Hurst. Guffey hit a popout to shallow center to end the threat.

Fourth inning: Texas leads 4-1

Hurst returned for the fourth and was incredibly efficient, getting three outs on nine pitches. He caught a swinging bunt for an out on one pitch. Leadoff hitter Chase Anderson then hit a groundout to second base before Hurst got another strikeout to end the run. If he hits 57 pitches, he can’t throw during the next three days of rest before stepping back on the mound. If he hits 66 pitches, that means he’ll have to take four days of rest.

In the second half, Texas was aggressive with the bats and got one hit, but a couple of grounders won by fielder’s choice ended the inning.

Fifth inning: Texas tries to defend 3-run lead

Hurst stayed in the game until the fifth inning, striking out Florida three on, three down. Jett Matthews caught a diving ball to shortstop and took Hurst through five innings on 67 pitches.

In the bottom of the inning, Bibaud made the first out of the inning before another pitcher change was made. Bibaud left the game with 26 pitches, meaning he can pitch in the next game.

Lathan Norton took over and ended the inning quickly.

Sixth inning: Hurst does the job, Texas wins 4-1

A groundout and a strikeout resulted in two outs. Hurst’s 77th pitch provided the last out. Boerne is now just one game away from the US final.
