As one of the most highly anticipated football seasons in the Texas school’s history finally gets underway, we take a look at the 2024 schedule. Will the Longhorns make a run at the SEC title in their first season in the conference? And will their regular season results be enough to secure one of the 12 spots in the expanded College Football Playoff?

Texas Longhorns writer Thomas Jones makes his predictions:

Longhorns Football Game-by-Game Predictions

August 31: Texas vs. Colorado State Football

The season opens against a traditionally competitive Mountain West Conference opponent, but any trouble against a Rams team that had a 5-7 record last year would raise immediate concerns ahead of their first-ever trip to Michigan’s big house.

Final result: Texas 48, Colorado State 16.

September 7: Texas vs. Michigan Football (No. 8)

Yes, the Wolverines lost a ton of offensive power and head coach Jim Harbaugh from last year’s national championship team, but they still boast one of the best defenses in the country.

Final result: Texas 28, Michigan 20.

GOLDEN: Steve Sarkisian used the initial adversity in Texas to build a winning team

September 14: Texas vs. UTSA Football

Head coach Jeff Traylor keeps his Roadrunners ready to play, and the Conference USA program would love to scare Texas again after suffering a loss in Austin two years ago.

Final result: Texas 34, UTSA 13.

September 21: Texas vs. Louisiana-Monroe Football

The Sunbelt Conference program hasn’t recorded a win in over a decade, meaning this game could mean a lot of snaps for many Longhorns.

Final result: Texas 52, Louisiana-Monroe 7.

September 28: Texas vs. Mississippi State Football

The Longhorns can relax as they enter their first SEC schedule, battling a Bulldogs team that had the worst offense in the league last season and is already on its third head coach in three seasons.

Final result: Texas 35, Mississippi State 10.

Oct. 12: Texas vs. No. 16 Oklahoma Football (Dallas).

It’s a new conference, but the old vitriol is still there in what is arguably the nation’s most bitter rivalry. And the Sooners will have to contend with a new quarterback, Jackson Arnold, in the Cotton Bowl.

Final result: Texas 38, Oklahoma 20.

October 19: Texas vs. No. 1 Georgia Football

This could be a meeting of the top-rated teams in the country and a preview of the SEC Championship game in December, but can the Longhorns keep up with the conference’s best Dawg?

Final result: Georgia 31, Texas 30.

October 26: Texas at Vanderbilt Football

The Longhorns are still licking some wounds after the showdown with Georgia, but a trip to Nashville should provide some relief.

Final result: Texas 35, Vanderbilt 10.

November 9: Texas vs. Florida, Football

The Gators have the pedigree and enough talent to make things interesting, but head coach Billy Napier begins his third season with Florida with just 11 wins in his first 25 games.

Final result: Texas 28, Florida 16.

November 16: Texas vs. Arkansas

Remember the portmanteau “Fayette-nam,” Longhorn fans, because the Hogs’ hometown has always been a place of terror for Texas, even as Arkansas’ program has sunk into mediocrity.

Final result: Texas 31, Arkansas 23.

November 23: Texas vs. Kentucky, Football

Don’t underestimate the Wildcats, who have one of the best defenses in the SEC, even if they lack the firepower of some of the conference’s other heavyweights.

Final result: Texas 26, Kentucky 21.

November 30: Texas at No. 20 Texas A&M Football

Kyle Field can accommodate more than 110,000 fans, but even the Aggies’ stadium might be too small to accommodate all the emotion when the Longhorns and A&M resume their century-long rivalry after 12 angst-filled years.

Final result: Texas 28, Texas A&M 24.
