The charges stem from the fatal shooting that occurred Sunday evening outside the Palmilla Apartments on Ashley River Road.

Investigators believe Matthews and his relative, 15-year-old Rakeem Xavier Jordan Baker, planned to rob a 17-year-old at gunpoint.

During the attempted robbery, the 17-year-old, whose name was not released, was shot and returned fire at the two teenagers.

Baker died at the scene of the accident and the 17-year-old was taken to hospital with injuries that were probably not life-threatening.

Stinson said no charges have been filed against the 17-year-old.

Mattews was taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center.

Charleston police are still investigating the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to contact the on-duty police chief at 843-720-2422 or email [email protected].
