Team News: Livramento starts against Saints, Kelly and Osula on the bench

The right-back, who joined United from the Saints last season, was allowed to play from the start against the promoted side when Eddie Howe’s team starts their English top-flight campaign at St. James’ Park.

Nick Pope makes his first Premier League appearance at St James’ Park since dislocating his shoulder in the Magpies’ 1-0 win over Manchester United in December. He will start behind a back four, with Fabian Schär and Dan Burn forming the heart of United’s defence, while Livramento and Lewis Hall occupy the respective full-back positions.

Bruno Guimarães, who scored on his first start for the Magpies in a 2-1 away win over Southampton in the 2021/22 season, was given the captain’s armband this afternoon and will line up in midfield alongside Sean Longstaff, who scored a brace in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg win over Southampton in January 2023, and fellow Brazilian Joelinton.

Jacob Murphy, who has scored five goals in as many pre-season games this season, and Anthony Gordon are expected to provide attacking support for Swedish frontman Alexander Isak, who scored a brace in the Magpies’ 5-1 win over Aston Villa on the opening weekend of the 2023/24 season.

William Osula, who joined the Magpies from Sheffield United last week, is on the bench. The Danish striker hopes to make his competitive debut for United this afternoon alongside Lloyd Kelly, who arrived at St James’ Park in June after leaving AFC Bournemouth.

In addition, Howe can use several options from the bench if needed: Joe Willock, who scored on his debut for the Magpies in the 3-2 home win over Southampton in the 2020/21 season, as well as Kieran Trippier, Miguel Almirón, Harvey Barnes and Emil Krafth have all been named as substitutes.

Matt Targett has been called up to United’s matchday squad for the first time since November after sustaining a thigh injury in the Magpies’ 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Manchester United.

Martin Dúbravka is the substitute goalkeeper.

Newcastle United: Nick Pope, Tino Livramento, Fabian Schär, Dan Burn, Lewis Hall, Sean Longstaff, Bruno Guimarães (c), Joelinton, Jacob Murphy, Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak.

Substitute: Martin Dúbravka, Kieran Trippier, Emil Krafth, Lloyd Kelly, Matt Targett, Joe Willock, Miguel Almirón, Harvey Barnes, Will Osula.
