Talented short story writers can submit entries to the Donegal Literature Festival

Five shortlisted authors will be invited to read their entries at the Letterkenny Cathedral Quarter Literary Festival from 17 to 20 October, at which time the winners will be announced.

Flash fiction is a short fictional narrative that provides character and plot development.

The work must not exceed 300 words, must be written by the author and must be previously unpublished.

Committee secretary Donnan Harvey said the competition had become a very popular annual event and they wanted to publicly recognise the interest from across the country.

“It’s really growing year after year. It’s an ideal forum for writers and creative people to showcase their work.”

“The competition will be judged by Averil Meehan,” said Mr Harvey.

Averil writes short stories, poems and radio plays.

Her poetry collection, Until Stones Blossom, is published by Summer Palace Press.

Averil’s writing has won prizes and been placed in various writing competitions, read at festivals and events, and broadcast on RTE Radio 1.

Full guidelines for entries are available on the Cathedral Quarter website. Copyright remains with the author. By entering the competition you accept the rules.

The winner receives €150 and the runner-up receives €100.

Three particularly coveted prizes are book vouchers from the Himalayan Cafe, Peter Mark Hairdressing Letterkenny and Universal Books.

The flash fiction competition is also covered in a new podcast exploring the Letterkenny Cathedral Quarter Literary Festival.

As a new feature for the festival, the “Ink and Inspiration Podcast” is produced in collaboration with Philip O’Kennedy.

Mr Harvey continued: “Please email your entry as a Word document to [email protected] by the closing date of 1 September 2024.

“The results will be announced at the end of September. And I wish you every success in your work.”

“Without the support of the local community it would be impossible to hold an event like this, so the festival would like to thank Bookmark, Letterkenny and Donegal ETB for sponsoring the main prizes,” said Mr Harvey.
