SUV rams Kaneland bus on first day of school – Shaw Local

No one was injured on Wednesday, August 14, when an SUV struck a Kaneland District 302 school bus on Meredith Road, south of Illinois Route 64, Maple Park, the Kane County Sheriff’s Office announced in a press release.

The accident occurred on the first day of school at 6:40 a.m.

The bus, carrying three students, was signaling that it was turning into the parking lot of Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Church, 5N539 Meredith Road, when a Ford Explorer attempted to pass the bus in a solidly marked no-passing zone, the release said.

While attempting to overtake the bus, the Explorer struck the front wheel and bumper on the driver’s side and then came to a stop, the press release said.

Maple Park Fire and EMS responded and all parties signed a release for treatment.

A witness waiting for another school bus at the end of a driveway in the area reported that the Kaneland bus’s yellow flashing lights were on and a left-turn flashing light was also on.

The witness then observed the Ford Explorer overtaking the school bus on the left and then crashing into the bus.

The driver and sole occupant of the Ford Explorer, a 58-year-old man from Belvidere, received a ticket for passing in a no-passing zone, the press release said.

Kaneland staff transferred the students and the driver to another school bus.
