Suspect charged in shooting of Smyth County deputy has died

SMYTH COUNTY, Virginia. – The suspect charged in connection with the shooting of a Smyth County sheriff’s deputy has died, according to District Attorney Phillip Blevins.

According to officials, 65-year-old Timothy Wayne Goodman died early Friday morning (August 16) at Johnson City Medical Center.

Deputy Hunter Reedy of the Smyth County Sheriff’s Office was shot by Goodman on Aug. 9 following a traffic stop, authorities initially told 10 News. Deputy Michael Fedorchuk was also shot and is currently recovering.

Goodman was charged with aggravated murder of Reedy, four counts of attempted aggravated murder, and use of a firearm in the commission of a serious crime in connection with the incident.

The tragic loss of Deputy Reedy has deeply impacted our community and police family. My office remains committed to honoring Deputy Reedy’s life and service. Goodman’s death closes an important chapter in this matter, but our commitment to supporting Deputy Reedy’s family, the other officers involved, and the entire police community is as strong as ever. My office will continue to work with law enforcement agencies to ensure all aspects of this case are handled appropriately. We are extremely grateful to the law enforcement partners who assisted Smyth County during this tragedy and to the community for their love and support.
