Survey shows: Developers see GenAI as a double-edged sword in game development

A new survey by Game developer collective shows that developers remain at an impasse when it comes to generative AI.

30 percent of respondents believe that the technology Development costs in the next twelve months. Conversely, 8 percent are sure it will lead to rising costs, while 35 percent are skeptical and 20 percent think the impact will be insignificant.

GenAI is controversial both in and from games, and the survey shows that it will remain controversial for some time. The main arguments against it are the environmental damage and the lower quality compared to using human artists.

In terms of quality, 17 percent of developers surveyed believe that genAI will improve the quality of games next year. 28 percent are neutral on this question, while 35 percent think its use will make games worse.

This concern has been expressed before regarding in-game graphics and voice acting. Since the end of July SAG-AFTRA Actor have gone on strike because of the “existential threat” posed by GenAI and previously discussed contracts that force them to Voting rights.

On the other hand, its effectiveness was touted as crucial to helping real athletes in EA Sports Football 25. Some studios, like Nintendohave not completely written off the technology, it just cannot be used as a quick solution during the development process.

Beginning of the year 49 percent of developers tracked by the Collective said their studios already use genAI at work, and 31 percent used it outside the office. Most in-office uses were in finance, community, and production management.

Sarah Brin, co-founder of Good Afternoon, recently talked about how executives are so caught up in the promise of AI that it has turned the creative process of games into a “clusterfuck.” Read here: Here.
