Suns final roster changes in the second half of the 2024 WNBA season

During the first half of the 2024 WNBA season, the Connecticut Sun were one of the league’s top teams, holding the second-best record behind the New York Liberty. When the Olympic break ended and the season resumed, the Sun had an open spot on the roster, which they used to sign Celeste Taylor to a 7-day contract, the team announced Friday.

The Sun made a major roster move just before the WNBA All-Star Weekend and the Olympic break, acquiring Marina Mabrey in a trade with the Chicago Sky for Rachel Banham and Moriah Jefferson. Mabrey has been a double-digit scoring threat her entire career and will help the Sun by adding another scorer.

Celeste Taylor is the second player the Sun currently have on a 7-day contract. Just before the Olympic break, the Sun signed Caitlin Bickle on a 7-day contract. Because her contract was signed just before the break, the remaining days have been deferred until the season resumes. Bickle’s 7-day contract expires on August 21.

Celeste Taylor is in her rookie season as a WNBA player, but will now play for her third team. Taylor was selected No. 15 overall in the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Indiana Fever.

Taylor played in five games for the Fever before being released when Damaris Dantas returned to the active roster. She signed a seven-day contract with the Phoenix Mercury on July 12, and due to the break, the remaining days were deferred until the season resumes.

Taylor’s seven-day contract with the Mercury expired on Friday following the team’s 85-65 win over the Sky. She had six points, one rebound, two assists and one blocked shot in her career game. The Mercury opted not to re-sign Taylor and she was immediately signed by the Sun in time for Friday’s game against the Dallas Wings.

This season, Taylor has appeared in a total of nine WNBA games, averaging 1.4 points, 0.6 rebounds and 0.9 assists while shooting 44.4 percent from the field, 50 percent from the three-point line and 50 percent from the free throw line.

Taylor was originally part of the Fever’s training camp squad and impressed with her defensive skills, but she has the next seven days to prove to the Sun why she belongs in the squad for the rest of the season.
