One of the main reasons I wanted to be Vice President of Student Body was because of the emphasis on organizing community-wide events that emphasize fellowship and fun. I truly believe that one of the greatest benefits of residential seminary is the opportunity for us to come together in person and celebrate different seasons of the school year together. Whether it’s full-course dinners (free meals for the entire VTS community on Friday nights year-round), a Halloween party, our annual Advent event, a pancake dinner on Mardi Gras, a Superbowl party, Spring Festival, the variety show, or graduation ceremonies, such moments of celebration and thanksgiving are the highlights of life in a faith community such as ours.

In Living Together, Dietrich Bonhoeffer tells us of one of the results of Christian community: “They meet one another as bearers of the message of salvation.” I believe for Virginia Theological Seminary this means that everyone should feel included in everyday student life, but in the broader hope that community in the residential seminary means seeing the gospel of love and grace lived out in a variety of people and pursuits. As Chancellor of the Student Body, my goal is to ensure this by making sure everyone is heard and has the opportunity to be heard at this seminary. Student life is your life. You can be part of any celebration or reconciliation that takes place when life is lived in the midst of other people. Your presence here makes the gospel more beautiful for others. We are happy to have you with us.
