Steve Kerr benches Derrick White and Tyrese Haliburton in the first half of the Olympic gold medal game against France

Steve Kerr benches Derrick White and Tyrese Haliburton in the first half of the Olympic gold medal game against France

Steve Kerr, head coach of the U.S. men’s national basketball team, is causing controversy with some of his rotation decisions at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The Golden State Warriors coach made a decision that is sure to anger two fan bases in the first half of Saturday’s gold medal duel between the USA and Team France.

Kerr chose to bench Indiana Pacers All-Star point guard Tyrese Haliburton, as he did in his team’s 95-91 semifinal win over Team Serbia, as well as Boston Celtics All-Defensive point guard Derrick White.

Kerr has generally relied on White’s defense and three-point shooting off the bench in those games. White was a late addition to the team, joining fellow Bostonians Jayson Tatum and Jrue Holiday only after LA Clippers All-NBA forward Kawhi Leonard was sent home during the team’s practice in Las Vegas.

When White plays, he is primarily used on defense, averaging just 3.8 points on a .412/.308/.500 slash line, 1.6 assists, 1.4 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.0 blocks per night.

Haliburton, on the other hand, was benched by Kerr on multiple occasions throughout the USA’s Olympic season, even in blowout victories. Haliburton played at least 8.8 minutes per night for the team and averaged 2.7 points on 60 percent shooting from the field and 50 percent shooting from beyond the arc.

For the 23-year-old two-time All-Star, who made his first All-NBA team as the best player on the Pacers team that reached the Eastern Conference finals with a record of 49-33, his first Olympic debut has to be described as extremely disappointing.

Jayson Tatum, the All-NBA combo forward on the Boston Celtics who controversially sat on the bench (along with Haliburton) for the entirety of the USA’s victory over Serbia on Thursday, made a token appearance but his impact was limited, scoring just two points.

At halftime, the Americans were leading the French team by just eight points (49:41).

Only one U.S. player, Devin Booker, All-Star shooting guard for the Phoenix Suns, has scored in double figures. The 6’5″ winger has scored 13 points so far, hitting 5 of 7 shots from the field (2 of 3 from distance) and 1 of 1 free throws, along with two rebounds and two assists.

For France, former NBA small forward Guerschon Yabusele scored 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while Victor Wembanyama scored 13 points on 6-of-10 shooting, five rebounds and two assists.

The USA placed great emphasis on passing in the first half. Team USA gave 13 assists on 19 field goals.
