Start time, speakers, how to watch and stream Kamala Harris’ speech

Vice President Kamala Harris will be in the spotlight tonight at the Democratic National Convention as she officially accepted the party’s presidential nomination a month after President Joe Biden dropped out of the race.

It will be the most important speech of Harris’ political career, a chance to tell her story to the more than 20 million viewers at home. Polls show that most voters are still unaware of her political career and her vision for the country, in part because she suddenly rose to the top of the Democratic ticket months before the election.

Harris has announced several policy proposals she would like to push for as president, including increasing the child tax credit, requiring a $25,000 down payment for first-time home buyers and calling for the elimination of the federal income tax on tips. Former President Donald Trump is also in favor of the idea (although Harris is calling for the tax break to be limited to service and hospitality workers, according to the Washington Post).

Regardless of what she says, tonight’s speech will be a very different experience for Harris than the 2020 DNC, where she was forced to speak to her supporters on a silent stage via television screens at the height of the Covid pandemic.

“Let us fight with hope,” Harris said in 2020, an echo of her 2024 strategy of emphasizing “freedom” and “joy” in her campaign against Trump.

“Hope is returning,” former First Lady Michelle Obama said of Harris’ campaign during her speech to the Democrats on Tuesday evening.

scandal Star Kerry Washington will host the evening’s festivities, while Doylestown native Pink is scheduled to perform before Harris takes the stage.

In a counter-program, Trump is scheduled to visit Cochise County in Arizona late Thursday morning and visit the southern border of the USA, according to his campaign team. His running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance, is also scheduled to speak about immigration and border security at a campaign event in Valdosta, Georgia.

The convention will be streamed live on the DNC’s official website and all social media channels. You can also stream it live on Inquirer.com, courtesy of the DNC:

In Philadelphia, live coverage begins at 8 p.m. on WHYY. ABC, NBC and CBS will broadcast live starting at 9 p.m., while Fox will not air live coverage of the DNC. All will offer broader streaming coverage on their respective platforms.

CNN, MSNBC, Fox News and NewsNation also report live a few hours before the event begins and each offer analysis.

Comcast Xfinity X1 subscribers can watch all programs by simply saying “DNC” into their remote control.

Who else will speak at the DNC on Thursday night?

That is still unclear. Until Thursday morning, the Democrats had only announced that Harris would speak on Thursday evening.

We will add a full list of speakers once the program for Thursday evening is announced.

What is the purpose of such congresses?

While political conventions have largely become televised events designed to promote political parties and their leaders, the role of the convention is to formalize a party platform. Highlights of the Democrats’ platform include cutting costs for families, combating climate change and restoring Roe v. Wadewhich gave women the legal right to abortion.

There is also usually a formal vote of delegates to officially nominate the party’s presidential candidate, but Harris went into this week as the official nominee thanks to a virtual vote of delegates held earlier this month. Instead, Democrats held a ceremonial roll call on Tuesday naming her the party’s presidential nominee.

Will Harris and Trump debate?

Harris and Trump have agreed to at least one presidential debate. It will take place on September 10 at 9 p.m. at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia and will be moderated by ABC News. Here’s what we know about tickets for the event.

This is not the first time Philadelphia has hosted a presidential debate. Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford debated at the Walnut Street Theater in 1976, the first televised debate since the famous face-off between Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy in 1960. The city also hosted a vice presidential debate between George HW Bush and Geraldine Ferraro in 1984 at the Philadelphia Convention Hall and Civic Center.

Trump sues ABC News and George Stephanopoulos for defamation after Good morning America The moderator said a jury had concluded that Trump “raped” E. Jean Carroll. The Manhattan jury had found Trump guilty of sexual assault but not rape at the 2023 trial because rape has a narrower definition under New York state law. Trump has said the ongoing legal proceedings would not affect his ability to debate on ABC because Stephanopoulos will not moderate.

The former president had proposed two more debates in September on various networks, but the Harris team rejected them. Instead, the Harris team said it would be open to a second debate in October if Trump appears on September 10.

Walz and Vance are scheduled to face off in a vice presidential debate on CBS in New York City on October 1.
