Southern California-based Muslim organization CAIR files suit in federal court against FBI for placing activist on no-fly list

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The country’s largest Muslim civil rights group is suing the FBI, alleging it is unfairly targeting Palestinian Americans who speak out against the war in Gaza.

This includes a local who was suddenly placed on the no-fly list.

Although Mustafa Zeidan’s mother lives over 11,000 kilometers away in Jordan, he tries to visit her every few months.

Zeidan’s mother has health problems and is dependent on him.

On March 28, Zeidan tried to fly to Jordan, but was denied a boarding pass at LAX airport.

“I was shocked when airport security told me, without giving any reason, that I was not allowed to board the plane,” Zeidan said.

He has lived in the United States for 30 years and has never been in trouble with the law.

He was informed that he had been placed on the US no-fly list and was considered a threat to national security.

Zeidan said: “I am deeply humiliated and dismayed to be included on the no-fly list.”

The only thing that has changed: Zeidan leads weekly protests in Victorville against the war in the Gaza Strip.

Dina Chehata, a civil rights attorney with the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Los Angeles, said: “For at least two years, he has been visiting his mother every two to three months. That’s very often. He had no problems with that until he started this very direct activism.”

CAIR has filed a federal lawsuit against the FBI and other agencies demanding that Zeidan be removed from the no-fly list.

“The government can put anyone on the list without notice, explanation or due process, regardless of whether it is related to illegal activities,” said Amr Shabaik, legal director of CAIR-LA.

When asked for comment, FBI officials said they would not comment on pending litigation.

Zeidan doesn’t know how long it will take to get him removed from the no-fly list.

In the meantime, he will continue to demonstrate and protest against the alleged injustices against the Palestinian people, he said.
