South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Old Dominion: crucial for the fourth year under Shane Beamer

South Carolina’s Week 1 clash against Old Dominion is more important than what one might think in the fourth year of Shane Beamer’s coaching career.

The South Carolina Gamecocks begin their 2024 college football season this week at home against Old Dominion. While it may not have the wow factor that other Week 1 games on the schedule have, it is still an extremely important game for the Gamecocks, who are entering their fourth year under head coach Shane Beamer.

First off, and this is the simplest argument, South Carolina needs to start the season with a win. The schedule gets more difficult right after week one, as the Gamecocks travel to Kentucky in week two and host LSU in week three. Starting off well is of great importance this season, so the Gamecocks need to take care of that.

It’s also important for quarterback LaNorris Sellers. He was named the starter by Beamer last week and this game will serve as a building block for the young quarterback. This is the perfect matchup for Sellers to find his footing and get a feel for what it will be like to be a full-time starter this season. If he can gain momentum in week one, South Carolina can feel even better going into the game against Kentucky and moving forward.

Sellers isn’t the only new face in this offense, though. South Carolina will have a handful of new names in the starting lineup, according to Beamer, and possibly a true freshman at tackle. After losing Spencer Rattler and Xavier Legette, the Gamecocks need to find new names to rely on this season. That can happen in week one against Old Dominion.

The quicker South Carolina settles in and feels comfortable on both sides of the ball this season, the better off they will be. Beamer will need to have a better season this year after his team failed to make a bowl game in 2023. The schedule will present some difficult obstacles to make that happen, but a good start against Old Dominion could make all the difference this season.
