South Carolina football senior on waiting list for preseason awards

The Maxwell Football Club announced Monday that South Carolina Football League senior defensive tackle Tonka Hemingway is among 90 nominees named to the preseason watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award.

Hemingway, a fifth-year player in the South Carolina football program, hails from the Palmetto State and has excelled as a versatile defensive lineman in his career. Hemingway can play both defensive tackle and defensive end (especially in the Gamecocks’ 3-3-5 set). He has worked most of his time as a tackle and is poised to have a great year as part of a strong defensive tackle rotation for position coach Travian Robertson.

The Bednarik Award has been given to the best defensive player in college football (FBS level only) every year since 1994. It is named after legendary linebacker Chuck Bednarik of the Penn Quakers and Philadelphia Eagles, who is a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
