Sony announces finalists for the 2024 Catchlight Film Festival

Sony has announced the finalists for the fourth annual Catchlight Film Festival. Presented by Sony Australia, the Catchlight Film Festival celebrates the best short films shot in Australia and New Zealand using Sony cameras. The festival aims to encourage filmmakers at all levels by showcasing the exceptional talent and skills of cinematographers and filmmakers who use the Sony system to capture their stories.

The winners of this year’s Catchlight Film Festival will be announced on Saturday 28 September at the 2024 Catchlight Film Festival Awards Ceremony in Sydney, hosted by Sony Australia.

The Catchlight Film Festival includes five categories: Fiction (screenplay), Non-Fiction (documentary), Student Fiction, Music Video. In 2024, the “Cinematic Social” category will premiere, honoring striking and beautiful works created specifically for the small screen.

The new Cinematic Social category was introduced in 2024 to recognize short-form, impactful content that has gained traction on social media in recent years, mostly in the form of travel and lifestyle reels. This content does not follow a typical fictional or non-fictional storyline. The sequence of content can follow a theme, idea, location or concept. Crucially, the visual identity of the content remains the same, giving the short film a sense of unity.

Building on Sony’s deep roots in the global film and television industry and its technology leadership in digital imaging, the Catchlight Film Festival aims to support the vibrant and thriving film community in Australia and New Zealand.
