Sonos will not revive old app, confirms CEO

Sonos will not revive its old app to help users who are having problems with the new app.

This comes from Sonos CEO Patrick Spence, who shared the news in a Reddit AMA (via The Verge).

“Until recently, I was hoping we could re-release the old app (S2) as an alternative for those of you who are having issues we haven’t yet resolved,” Spence wrote.

“The trick, of course, is that Sonos is not just the mobile app, it’s also software that runs on your speakers and in the cloud. In the months since we launched the new mobile app, we’ve updated the software that runs on our speakers and in the cloud to the point where S2 today is less reliable and less stable than what you remember. After extensive testing, we reluctantly concluded that re-releasing S2 would make the problems worse, not better. I’m sure that’s disappointing. For me, it was disappointing,” he added.

The problems Spence is referring to are related to the company’s new app, which launched in April but was so poor and full of bugs that the company apologized for it in July. The Sonos app is a key part of the company’s ecosystem of home speakers, soundbars and headphones, and when it doesn’t work properly, it can cause a lot of headaches for owners of Sonos products.

In July, the company presented a plan to fix the problems in the coming months. But apparently things didn’t go as smoothly as planned: Sonos postponed the launch of two products until all the bugs were fixed.
