Sonos considers bringing back its old app despite hardware headwinds and layoffs

Sonos has fallen on hard times since launching a brand new app in April that was immediately criticized by customers. While the company has a plan to improve the new app, Sonos leadership is considering the possibility of relaunching the old app to provide relief for itself and its users.

Last month, there was an official apology from Sonos CEO Patrick Spence with a detailed timeline on how they would proceed with updates to fix the app issues:

But now it seems that this plan is not enough to satisfy customers. Report from The edgeSonos leadership has discussed the idea of bringing back the old Sonos app “S2” to address user complaints while trying to iron out any issues with the new app.

The news comes after Sonos announced the layoffs of 100 employees this morning. Spence also said earlier this week that the revamp of the new app could cost between $20 million and $30 million.

The app issue forced the company to delay the launch of two new products, and Spence said the software issue had “completely overshadowed” the Ace over-ear headphones.

Sources have told The edge that Sonos still hopes to release one of those two delayed products — an updated Arc soundbar — in October.

Although the company is considering bringing back the old Sonos app, no decision has been made yet.

In the meantime, the company should stick to Spence’s previously published bi-weekly update schedule:

Sonos app update timeline

July and August:

  • Improve stability when adding new products
  • Implementation of music library configuration, browsing, searching and playing

August and September:

  • Improve volume response
  • User interface improvements based on customer feedback
  • Improve overall system stability and error handling

September:

  • Improve the reliability of alarm consistency and reliability

September and October:

  • Restore playlist and queue edit mode
  • Improve functionality in settings

What do you think? Should Sonos bring back the old S2 app to restore functionality and trust while they work on the new app? Share your thoughts in the comments!
