Shots lead to the interruption of a high school football game between Laney and Westside in Georgia

Week 1 of the Georgia high school football season began Friday night with a full schedule of games, but one of them ended in violence outside the stadium.

According to a report by Alexandra Koch of the Augusta Chronicle, shots were fired outside the Laney-Westside game. According to the report, the game was called off in the third quarter with Westside leading 7-6 at the time of the call-off.

“At this time, it appears that all shots were fired outside the stadium,” the police press release said. “Investigators are on site and no further information will be released at this time.”

According to Koch’s report, the shooting allegedly occurred shortly after 9:15 p.m. near the intersection of Augusta Court and Blounts Avenue, during the third quarter of the game. No victims of the shooting were found, but a search of the area revealed shell casings and property damage, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Koch, the Richmond County school system has not responded to inquiries about Friday night’s shooting.

Players, coaches, fans and students ran from the stands and sought shelter after several gunshots were heard outside the stadium. The stadium was evacuated and the game was suspended and later canceled.
