Popular burger chain Shake Shack is closing nine low-revenue locations in three states, the company confirmed in an emailed statement to USA TODAY on Thursday.

The closures affect six locations in California, two in Texas and one in Ohio, according to the chain. The company said in the report that “based on this assessment, it does not currently anticipate closing additional Shacks in the foreseeable future.”

“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to close a small group of Shacks due to a variety of factors, including underperformance,” Shake Shack CEO Rob Lynch said in the statement obtained by USA TODAY. “We remain focused on supporting our team members during this transition and look forward to continuing our growth and opening many more locations across the country.”

Lynch also said in the statement that the chain plans to open 40 new company-owned locations and 40 additional licensed locations this year.

Since Shake Shack opened its first location in Madison Square Park in New York City in 2004, the company has expanded to more than 510 locations, including 330 in 33 states and the District of Columbia and more than 180 international locations, according to the company’s 2023 financial results.
