Opening Night Live gave us a first look at Borderlands 4

If there’s one thing the gaming studios of the world need right now, it’s a bit of hype.

It was a year without the launch of any new major consoles, which saw strikes and cutbacks in the industry and thousands of workers laid off.

The opening night of Gamescom is often an opportunity for a big, shiny night to get fans in the mood for the year ahead.

To set the stage for the next 12 months, here are the key insights we gained from Europe’s biggest gaming show in Germany.

A Borderlands sequel

In a year in which games became films and films became games, everything at the Cologne Exhibition Centre revolved around the big trailers.

This year, Borderlands attracted attention with its film adaptation starring Cate Blanchett and Kevin Hart.

The film received some of the best harshest criticismbut that didn’t stop plans for a new game in the main series.

We don’t know much about the game yet, except that its release is scheduled for 2025.

No specific platforms have been announced yet, but the game is expected to be released on PC, PlayStation 5, and the latest Xbox consoles.

Call of Duty takes us back to the Gulf War

Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 takes players back to the 90s

We already knew that the upcoming Black Ops 6 would be set during the First Gulf War in the 1990s.

Now we’ve taken a look at one of the single-player campaign missions, which involves chases and shootouts in close quarters.

This launch is already being closely watched.

It is the first time that a Call of Duty title will be released on day one on Microsoft’s Game Pass subscription service.

Anyone who subscribes to the service will get the game at no extra cost, while PlayStation owners will have to pay around £70 ($90).

Indiana Jones gets a release date

Fallout maker Bethesda, now part of Microsoft’s huge studio collection, hopes to further increase excitement for its Indiana Jones game with a release date.

We found out that the game, titled Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, will be released before the end of the year… at least if you plan on playing it on an Xbox or PC.

These players will be able to get their hands on it starting December 9th, just in time for the holiday shopping season.

There were question marks as to whether this game would be released for competing consoles, but it was announced that a version for the PlayStation 5 was in development.

However, this will not be completed until spring 2025.

Amazon enters the multiplayer arena

King of Meat is released for PS5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch

One of the more unexpected announcements of the evening was a cooperative fighting game called “King of Meat.”

Not another cooking game, but a new take on a dungeon crawler where you can team up with your friends to survive in a crazy reality show competition.

This is published by Amazon Games and developed by Guildford-based indie studio Glowmade – a studio founded by former employees of Fable makers Lionhead Studios.

More hero worship from Marvel in December

Marvel fans will recognize many characters from Rivals

Speaking of team-based multiplayer titles, NetEase Games has announced December 6th as the release date for its free-to-play shooter Marvel Rivals.

Many of the characters you may recognize are designed to attract new players, including Captain America, Black Panther, and Iron Man.

We also received a new gameplay trailer that confirms that this title will have a lot in common with the popular hero shooter Overwatch.

A new perspective on the world of Fable

Does the name Peter Molyneux mean anything to you?

We now know that as one of the main creators of the fantasy epic “Fable,” he is working on a new project called “Masters of Albion.”

If you’re a Fable fan, you know that Albion is the name of the world these games are set in.

Curiously, however, this game will apparently not be set in the same universe as the Fable games.

The trailer showed a top-down real-time strategy game with elements of resource management and quests.

And something else… more from Mafia

At the end of the show we got a brief insight into a new project from Hangar 13 in the Mafia series.

The title is Mafia: The Old Country, and while we haven’t been given a release date or launch window, we’ve been promised more details in December.

It’s no surprise that this plays a big role in the Game Awards.
