Seth MacFarlane’s company acquires Matt Dinniman’s dungeon crawler Carl for an adaptation

In a move that cheekily reflects the events of the book, Matt Dinniman’s Dungeon Crawler Carm will be visible on a television screen near you.

Today, Deadline broke the news that Universal International Studios and Seth MacFarlane’s production company Fuzzy Door are looking to adapt the novel for television. Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok, the Mandalorian) when writing the scripts.

In Dungeon Crawler CarlThe eponymous Carl finds himself in an apocalyptic world and fights for survival together with his ex-girlfriend’s cat, Princess Donut. The blurb of the book says it all:

Do you know what’s worse than breaking up with your girlfriend? Being stuck with her prize-winning show cat. And do you know what’s even worse? An alien invasion, the destruction of every man-made structure on Earth, and the systematic exploitation of any survivors for a sadistic, intergalactic game show. This is it.

Join Coast Guard veteran Carl and his ex-girlfriend’s cat Princess Donut as they attempt to survive the end of the world – or just level up – in a video game-like, trap-filled fantasy dungeon. A dungeon that’s actually the setting for a reality TV show with countless viewers across the galaxy. Exploding goblins. Magic potions. Deadly drug-dealing llamas. This is no ordinary game show.

Welcome, crawler. Welcome to the dungeon. Survival is optional. Entertaining the audience is not.

“I’m excited to bring this crazy story to a much wider audience,” Dinniman said in a statement to Deadline. “I think it’s in good hands with Fuzzy Door and Universal International Studios.”

“Matt captures genre-bending at its finest with his hilarious and emotionally heartbreaking characters,” said Fuzzy Door President Erica Huggins in the same statement. “That, coupled with the semi-grounded but unique sci-fi world Dungeon Crawler Carl plays is an ideal Fuzzy Door project.”

Dinniman initially published his own work Dungeon Crawler Carl as an e-book and audiobook, which has now sold over a million copies. He has published five more books in the series, and a hardcover edition of the first will be released on August 27, 2024.

There’s no news yet on when the adaptation will go into production, let alone when it will be on TV near you. Symbol-Paragraph-End
