Sequel to “Lies of P” may contain open-world elements

Sequel to “Lies of P” may contain open-world elements

Key findings

  • A post-credits scene hints at a sequel to Lies of P, which may be an open-world style game.
  • Neowiz may be considering an open-world format for the sequel, taking inspiration from successful titles like Elden Ring.

Lies of P was one of the biggest surprises of 2023. The Pinocchio-themed soulslike game developed by Neowiz met all the expectations of long-time fans of the genre with its emotional combat, challenging difficulty level, and unique setting and enemy design.

For those who have played through the game, the developers were kind enough to share a taste of what we can expect from the sequel, and now a new job posting has given us even more clues as to what’s coming next from the studio.

Lies Of P may be released as an open world

Upon completion and after the credits rolled, players were treated to a stinger in which a character named Paracelsus is on a train and takes a call from an unknown woman. He says, “When I get back, I’ll find her. I’m sure I will,” before pausing and saying, “Dorothy.” The scene cuts to Lies of P’s Krat, in which a character, presumably Dorothy, runs across a rooftop wearing red shoes that she taps together three times – similar to The Wizard of Oz.

This teaser is the first hint as to how the story of Lies of P will continue. And now, a new job listing found by Tech4Gamers may have given us a hint as to the type of game we’ll be playing.

The job listing in Korean is looking for a field level planner and someone with “extensive experience playing open world level games” and “someone with experience creating a seamless world.” The job listing also states that they are looking for “level designers to act as a hub between dungeons.” It’s unclear if this indicates that the title will be fully open world or if it will just feature more open sections than Lies of P, but it’s certainly a taste of what’s coming next.

Given the first game’s clear FromSoft inspirations and the success of Elden Ring and its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, it’s no surprise that Neowiz and Round8 are considering an open-world formula. But only time will tell what the studio actually cooks up.
