Selena Gomez stars in Netflix Awards contenders

Awards season is closer than you think, and Netflix is kicking off the fall season with a first look at the streamer’s lead contender, Emilia Pérez. The “musical epic” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May and won the Cannes Jury Prize, as well as a historic Best Actress award shared by the film’s three leads: Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldańa and Karla Sofía Gascón.

Written and directed by Jacques Audiard (“A Prophet,” “Rust and Bone”), the film is described as a “daring fever dream” and tells the story of four women in Mexico, each seeking their own happiness. Fearsome cartel boss Emilia (Karla Sofía Gascón) asks Rita (Zoe Saldaña), a misunderstood lawyer stuck in a dead-end job, for help in faking her death so that Emilia can finally live her true self.

In his review from Cannes, TheWrap critic Ben Croll praised Audiard’s enthusiasm for telling the story of a transgender cartel boss. “That the Spanish-language film is also a full-fledged musical, replete with beautifully choreographed numbers and catchy ditties about vaginoplasties and tracheal shaving, also reflects Audiard’s high profile. This is the movie you make when you’re showered with awards and don’t care about anything,” he said.

Netflix secured the film for $8 million after a bidding war in Cannes. The film is now set to be shown at film festivals in the fall and then at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

Check out the trailer below. Emilia Pérez will be released in select theaters on November 1st before streaming on Netflix on November 13th.
