Second suspected shooter, 15, charged with murder after killing of teen in Pierson

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Florida. – The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office announced Sunday that it had arrested a 15-year-old boy as the suspected second shooter in an attempted robbery that turned fatal in Pierson Wednesday night.

Martin Martinez, 15, is charged with first-degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. The shooting left 17-year-old Odie Carbajal of Crescent City dead and an 18-year-old injured. News 6 is naming Martinez due to the circumstances of the case.

Officers responded to the shooting in the area of 380 Main Street around 10:15 p.m. Wednesday and found a vehicle crashed on the side of the road. The driver, Carbajal, was unresponsive. Carbajal had multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead, according to the sheriff’s office. Of the two other passengers who were in the vehicle during the shooting, an 18-year-old was shot in the leg and the other was uninjured, according to the sheriff’s office.

Martinez was arrested after detectives obtained a search warrant and extracted data from his cellphone, allegedly finding evidence linking him to the shooting, the sheriff’s office said on social media.

The 15-year-old’s arrest follows the arrest of 17-year-old Tania Lopez Morales, who turned herself in on Thursday and allegedly admitted to a role in the shooting, according to Sheriff Mike Chitwood.

“So we came in contact with a 17-year-old who basically confessed to the whole thing. She said they ‘ordered weed’; she, her 15-year-old brother and a 15-year-old friend had ordered weed from our victims, a quarter pound of weed, and they decided to just take it instead of paying for it, and in her words ‘things got out of control,'” Chitwood said Friday.

Morales allegedly contacted Carbajal via Instagram and arranged to meet him in Pierson to buy a quarter pound of marijuana, Chitwood said. She and Martinez are accused of approaching Carbajal at the driver’s door, both with handguns, with the intent to rob him before firing the weapons, striking Carbajal and the 18-year-old who was in the car with him, according to the sheriff’s office.

Chitwood said they expect Morales to face adult charges in the case, adding Friday that they still have to wait and see “whether that will happen with Martinez.”
