Seattle Mariners outfielder on the up after disappointing first half of the season

Almost a month later – and it seems that the Los Angeles Angels’ victory over the Seattle Mariners from July 22 to 24 can be seen as a turning point of the season for the latter.

It was that series that spawned an impassioned postgame interview with Scott Servais, in which he said the Mariners “gave” the Angels a game. It was the series in which three good starts from the team’s starting lineup were wasted.

Since then, Seattle has a 10-6 record in 16 games, including two series wins against the Chicago White Sox and New York Mets, respectively.

There are several reasons for the Mariners’ renewed success since the disappointing performance against Los Angeles. For example, there are the transfers of outfielder Randy Arozarena, infielder Justin Turner and relievers Yimi Garcia and JT Chargois.

These four have helped add much-needed experience to the offense and bullpen, and none of them have the glaring weaknesses they did before the trade deadline.

But trade acquisitions can only help so much, and many players have taken steps to improve since the sweep.

One of those players is outfielder Mitch Haniger.

According to Statmuse, Haniger had a batting average of .206 with nine home runs and 35 RBIs from the start of the season through the series against the Angels.

Since then, Haniger has a .220 batting average (11-for-50) with two home runs and eight RBIs in 15 games. That improvement may not seem drastic, but Haniger was also responsible for some of those 10 wins since the Los Angeles series.

He had two walk-offs (a walk against the Philadelphia Phillies on August 3 and a three-RBI double against the Detroit Tigers on August 8). He set the franchise record for most walk-offs in team history with eight walk-offs.

Haniger also had a four-game hit streak before Wednesday’s game against the Tigers.

Seattle manager Scott Servais spoke in a pre-game interview on August 4 about how Haniger approaches his swing and how it has improved over the past three weeks.

“Mitch has always been one of those guys that makes mechanical adjustments to his body feel and his swing,” Servais said. “He’s going to make a lot of adjustments throughout the year. He has a good understanding of his swing. … I like where he’s at right now. I give him a lot of credit – he’s continued to battle through it.”

Haniger has a batting average of .209 with 11 home runs and 43 RBIs this season.

Haniger has spent a total of six seasons with the Mariners, and his name is high in the record books for several franchise stats. Given his continued improvement throughout the season, he will likely end up higher on those lists.
