Scottsdale is now on its way to becoming a Blue Zone Certified Community

IIt all started with Dan Buettner, founder of Blue Zones, National Geographic Fellow and bestselling author, and his groundbreaking research into the world’s “Blue Zones” and the longevity practices of the people who live there.

The key finding is that people in these regions didn’t choose to live longer, but rather their physical and social environments were designed to make it easier. Buettner created the Blue Zones Project to make healthy options easily accessible and improve everyone’s well-being. The Blue Zones Project has already reached more than 75 American communities to improve the places and spaces where we spend 90 percent of our time.

The Blue Zones Project came to Scottsdale in March 2022 at the invitation of HonorHealth to improve the city’s well-being and ensure that all residents have a fair and equitable chance at living long and healthy lives by reducing health care costs, increasing productivity, and improving the economy and quality of life for residents, neighbors, and visitors.

Individuals and organizations are provided with a selection of evidence-based best practices to choose from to create long-term, sustainable change. The change is designed to help people move naturally, eat mindfully and develop the right mindset; all important factors for living a long, fulfilling and happy life.

The criteria to become a Blue Zone Certified Community is extensive. Scottsdale will implement wellness improvement strategies in thirteen core areas focused on people, places and policies to become a Blue Zones Certified Community. Achieving these goals will allow the community to progress so that positive environmental change is integrated into the community and healthy lifestyle choices become an easy decision for all residents.
