Ryan Garcia is angry because he was not listed in Ring Magazine’s new pound-for-pound rankings after Devin Haney win

Ryan Garcia has vented his frustration over Ring Magazine’s new pound-for-pound list after he was dropped from the rankings following his surprise win over Devin Haney last Saturday.

The 25-year-old went into the fight as a big underdog against fellow American star Haney, who entered the ring as the seventh best pound-for-pound fighter in the world after previously winning the undisputed lightweight world title with high-profile victories against Vasyl Lomachenko and Regis Prograis, thus becoming world champion in two weight classes.

But in a surprise fight, Garcia knocked down Haney three times and won by majority decision. This resulted in Haney being removed from Ring Magazine’s new pound-for-pound top ten list, but Garcia did not take his place. Instead, the three boxers under Haney moved up one position, with Japan’s Junto Nakatani coming in at number ten. Nakatani recently became world champion in three weight classes and reigns at flyweight, super flyweight and now bantamweight.

Undisputed welterweight champion Terence Crawford currently tops the list, with fellow superstar Naoya Inoue, Canelo Alvarez, Oleksandr Usyk and Dimitry Bivol also featured in the top 10 pound-for-pound rankings. Garcia has yet to win a world title as he missed weight for the Haney fight, making him ineligible to claim the crown despite his impressive triumph.

In a Twitter forum he set up on Wednesday after the new rankings were announced, the Californian puncher couldn’t hide his feelings about the snub. Garcia said: “I beat Haney and he won pound for pound, so I should win pound for pound. But they don’t want to put me on that list because they’re haters.”

Garcia’s latest win has put him inside the top ten, but Ring Magazine is usually hesitant to rate a fighter based on just one win. The boxing world will be watching the 25-year-old’s next move closely before deciding if he deserves a place among the world’s elite boxers.
