Battle

Russia fired several missiles and drones at parts of northern and eastern Ukraine overnight, the Kiev military said on Sunday, adding that its defense systems destroyed most of the weapons before they could reach their targets. The attacks targeted Ukraine’s Chernihiv, Sumy, Kharkiv and Donetsk regions, the Ukrainian Air Force said on the messaging app Telegram.
Five civilians were killed and 12 others injured when Ukraine shelled the town of Rakitnoye in Russia’s Belgorod region, the region’s governor, Vyacheslav Gladkov, said on Sunday. Three children were among the victims, he added.
Ukraine said on Sunday that two journalists were injured and a third was missing in a Russian night attack on a hotel in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk. Vadym Filashkin, head of the Donetsk region’s government, said the journalists were British, American and Ukrainian citizens and that a search operation was underway.
On Saturday, Ukraine said five people were killed in a Russian attack on a residential area in the eastern Ukrainian town of Kostiantynivka near the front line in the Donetsk region.
Five drones were shot down over the Voronezh region in southwestern Russia on the border with Ukraine, injuring two people, the region’s governor, Alexander Gusev, said on Saturday. According to local media reports, Ukrainian military intelligence also claimed to have blown up a warehouse containing 5,000 tons of ammunition in the same region.

Russia and Ukraine exchanged 115 prisoners of war from both sides on Saturday, both countries confirmed. The United Arab Emirates acted as mediator.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday that a newly developed Ukrainian “drone missile” called Palianytsia would bring war back to Russia, while calling Russia’s Vladimir Putin a “sick old man from Red Square.” Speaking in a video address to mark Independence Day, Zelensky also said that Russia wants to “destroy” Ukraine, but that the war has “returned to its homeland.”
Ukraine is seeking permission from its Western allies to use long-range Storm Shadow missiles to destroy targets deep inside Russia, believing this could force Moscow to stop fighting, the Guardian reported.
